My name is Grace (vanVelthuysen) Kaplan. I will be 60 years old in a few months which means I’ve lived in the US for 57 years. I’m marching because I’m a political refugee immigrant, a woman who has suffered sexual assault, discrimination and harassment, a minority, have family and friends who are/were Veterans, and have a pre-existing condition (Multiple Sclerosis). I’m marching to protect my rights and identity on all these fronts. This picture was taken this year on a trip to my birth nation: Indonesia. It marked first time I was able to return since leaving when I was merely 9 months old with my family fleeing religious, ethnic and political persecution.
