Why I’m Joining the Disability March: I had a baby in May, after several years of trying and two heartbreaking missed miscarriages. Not surprisingly, he means the world to me and I want a better world for him than the one the Trump administration will bring. I want him to grow up in a world that values love, truth, education, diversity, and liberty and justice for all — not one filled with hatred, where only the rich get ahead while the rest of us are forced to fight for the scraps left behind.
I also want to fight for universal health care as a right for all people. The ACA has been one of the best things to ever happen in my life. I’ve been a type 1 diabetic for more than 20 years, and having access to the medication and health care I need to live — without having to beg for it — has been nothing short of miraculous. In addition to my diabetes, when I was pregnant, I was diagnosed with a rare, pregnancy-related autoimmune condition called pemphigoid gestationis. It only occurs in one out of every 50,000 to 60,000 pregnancies, and causes unrelenting itching and painful, itchy blisters that cover the body from head to toe. I’ve had to have 20 hours of IV antibody infusion treatments each month since my son was born in May. These treatments are absolutely essential to my health and my sanity, and they’d be well out of my reach if it weren’t for the ACA.
Additionally, I want to stand in solidarity with marginalized Americans: women, people of color, the disabled, immigrants, etc. and be a part of this great movement to resist the tyranny of a hateful minority. We are the majority. We are the future.
