I am Marching. Although physically not able to be present in but a virtual way, I am grateful for the opportunity to be present virtually. I am recovering from recent open heart surgery.
Our nation is in grave danger from within. Hatred and greed have taken over. We are in danger of losing all that we have gained since 1920. Not only are our Civil Rights losing ground, but our place within the world is slipping away. Our country has been taken hostage by a nightmare attempting to surround itself with more of the same. Review of the people appointed to Trumps cabinet confirms this. Their vision is greatly flawed and if allowed to move forward without our presence, we will face a national disaster; many lives will be damaged; the world will suffer.
I need to stand and be counted in resisting this takeover and I need the strength of my sisters and brothers to speak up for our values.
I attended college from 1965-69 and was trained in social action by St. Joseph nuns who marched with Dr. King and John Lewis. I was active in both Voters’ Rights and War Resistance. We grew as a nation, gained rights for more of our citizens, expanded women’s rights, and these last years, by electing President Obama, made progress in Universal Health Care and environmental issues.
I am sickened by the outcome of this election, but not paralyzed. We can overcome. We’ve done it before but now it is even more critical.
I was named for my mother who was an early member of NOW, worked diligently within her community for women’s rights and led a model life of service to her community. She was a great role model.
This is a bit of free flow undisciplined writing. So much is important but so little time / space to tell. I will continue to work for the children, for our Nation and our world, for the environment, and for those who have no voice.
